How to Write a Cookbook - 7 Strategies Revealed!
Writing a cookbook can be a great adventure! But, you'll have a greater chance of being successful if you approach the adventure as a project. A successful project is solidly based on a plan that covers the entire duration of the project - from start to finish. This includes a "planning stage" where you would think about the project before you start any work.
I've said before that it's very important to ask yourself WHY you want to write a cookbook. Once you become clear on this, you'll be able to move through the rest of the steps easily. Take time to think about all the reasons why you want to write your cookbook, and write them down. Take notes and elaborate on each of the points you come up with. Your answers will be unique. They depend on your situation, your job, or the lack of a job, the industry you work work in, your budget, your level of cooking expertise, your interests, your ethnicity, how you spend your free time. and on and on. Familiarize yourself with your WHY, and move on from there. Once you know why, the 'how to write a cookbook' road will be less bumpy!
Once you understand why you want to embark on this journey, you can begin to formulate a VISION for your cookbook. Envision the book already completed. How does it look? What is the title? Envision the photos, the artwork. Throw in all the details, and don't talk yourself out of anything at this point. Approach the visioning process with reckless abandon-where anything is possible. Your vision will be much stronger when you allow your imagination to run free. Refer back to your vision during the entire process.
BELIEVE in yourself. Know that you can complete this project. Once you decide, make a commitment to complete. Write it down. Give yourself a deadline. Share your dream with friends and family members that are supportive. Avoid negative people who do not support your idea.
When these 3 steps are completed you can begin to TAKE ACTION. Develop an action plan for your cookbook that includes a time frame for completion. You'll also want to decide on the various chapters you'll have in your book, how many recipes you'll have, what types of recipes, how much you want to charge for the book, and whether you will be getting the book printed, or deliver it as an e-book. The type of book you choose to create will depend on how you want to use the book. If you are a pro-chef or personal chef, you would want a hard book, so you can sell it directly to your customers.
Then comes the marketing plan. You must determine "WHO" is your target customer. Once you determine that, you can develop the ways you will be reaching your target customer. This is the "HOW" part. The marketing plan is the most important item. Your cookbook will not sell if you have no way of reaching your customer. You must be clear on "how to market a cookbook."
Your marketing plan will require you to take specific actions, sometimes many times, over and over. This is where it can get difficult. Realize that the "fortune is in the follow through." You may have to continue to market for a solid year to gain momentum. This is not a game of giving up. Stay focused and go back to your "WHY" if you become discouraged. It will always pick you up! Stick with your cookbook marketing plan. If something is not giving you the desired results, revisit, review and revise. Remember, your cookbook marketing plan is a living, breathing document.
I've developed a step-by-step system that shows you exactly how to write a cookbook and how to market a cookbook. My plan will help you get your cookbook project on track, and keep you there from start to finish. This includes powerful book marketing techniques that are pertinent to the 2010 market and beyond. I've touched on the most important techniques for marketing in today's market in my video "How to Market a Cookbook." How to Write a Cookbook: About The Rose Cookbook - a Treasury of Rose Recipes from Around the World
Today, I wanted to tell you a little bit more about my book, The Rose Cookbook-a Treasury of Rose Recipes from Around the World. I’m also posting one of the videos about my cookbook here so you can see how I’m using video to market my cookbook. Keep in mind that one of my target markets is the “tea party” crowd! Of which, I’m a card carrying member!
I began the book in 2000 and after mulling over it, I finally self-published the book in 2007. Writing my first cookbook has changed my life for the better. Looking back, my only wish is that it hadn’t taken me so long. But, no regrets here! Now I’m just having so much fun with it, that I’m just grateful to have been able to see it through. It has been a labor of love.
My book has opened many wonderful doors for me. For one thing, I was compelled to create my cookbook writing course – “The 7 Secrets of a Successful Self-Published Cookbook.” I’ve now made it a personal mission to help as many motivated cookbook authors make their dream of having a cookbook a reality as I can, with the help of this course.
Like me, I’m hoping you’ll fall in love in the kitchen while you learn to create sweet and savory dishes with the world’s most beloved flower—the rose. The Rose Cookbook will transport you to a place where rose petals meet their botanical relatives in a truly lively collection of recipes that are sure to be the hit of any celebration. And once you get the hang of it, you’ll find out that rose petals breathe new fun and sophistication into tea parties, can add romance to dinners, and lend a touch of “bed and breakfast” charm to your Sunday morning brunches!
With 300+ rose recipes from all over the world, The Rose Cookbook is steeped in history and anecdotes. The book offers cooks of all levels an opportunity to use roses—in the kitchen, in a fun, exciting, and new way. Always elegant, The Rose Cookbook will inspire and entertain you—cooks and gardeners alike.
With an expanded section devoted to tea time and entertaining, you’ll enjoy creating recipes that will surprise and impress party guests, making even the smallest gathering, a memorable occasion! The recipes in The Rose Cookbook can be enjoyed anytime, and will be equally pleasurable at special occasions, full-blown parties, meals with your family or, with a simple cup of tea—enjoyed in peace and solitude.
You’ll also learn that botanically, the rose has some health-giving family members including apples, peaches, plums, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and almonds. I’ve taken a natural and intuitive approach to combining rose petals and rose flavorings with these fruits in many of the dessert and main course recipes. The end results will show that these related ingredients compliment each other, bringing food and flowers to the table in a creative and beautiful way.
The Rose Cookbook will delight you with its wide variety of tantalizing main dishes, sumptuous desserts, elegant tea sandwiches, jams, sauces, beverages and beauty recipes, along with some interesting rose history, anecdotes and quotations. Cooking with roses is fun, and garnishing a dish with rose petals brings joy to the cook, captivates your guests, and fascinates children! I hope you’ll try it!

How to Write a Cookbook - Survival Guide for Writing a Cookbook
Whether you’re interested in writing a cookbook, self-publishing a cookbook, or marketing a cookbook you’ve just completed, you’ve come to the right place! I published my first cookbook The Rose Cookbook- a Treasury of Rose Recipes from Around the World, in 2007. You can read more about my book at TheRoseDiva.com.
Since then I’ve been involved with some pro-chefs, personal chefs and non-profit organizations, who had a similar idea, they all wanted to write and self-publish a cookbook to benefit their businesses. Rather than work with them one-on-one, I realized there was a need for an up-to-the-minute cookbook writing course. That got me thinking, so I created my new home study course – “The 7 Secrets of a Successful Self-Published Cookbook.”
From the response I received for last week’s introductory teleseminar, I’m certain my hunch was right. Callers from all over the United States were on the line. Even more exciting were the calls that came from outside the US, including Canada, Turkey, and Italy. I’m now coaching a student from Nepal, who’s writing his first cook: “Recipes from Top of the World.” The internet and social networking sites have given me to ability to deliver this class on a global level. It’s exciting to embrace these possibilities!
This week I wanted to focus on how to get started with a cookbook. I decided to come up with a “Survival Guide” for cookbook writing. Like any book, it’s very important to gain clarity on your “why.” Why do you want to write your cookbook? I ask all my students this question. Knowing the answer to this question will keep you on course throughout the writing, publishing, and marketing processes. So give it some thought, and write down your ideas. Knowing “why” will act as your compass throughout the journey—when the going can get tough. Your clarity will keep you focused and keep you moving forward. You won’t throw up your hands in frustration half way through and ask, “Why am I doing this?”
Writing a book can be strenuous, so I wanted to share some good pointers about preparing yourself and your home, for the “cookbook journey.” This is just a small part of what’s in store in my class. For more information and to sign-up for the class, go to CookbookCoach.com. Seven weeks, seven teleseminars, and 1 bonus call. Start now, and my easy to follow, step-by-step approach will have you well on your way to completing your cookbook in 2010!
